Hugging Face Releases Free ChatGPT Clone: HuggingChat

Hugging Face, the machine learning community and AI tools platform, has recently announced the release of HuggingChat, an open source ChatGPT clone that anyone can use or download for themselves. HuggingChat is based on the Open Assistant Conversational AI Model, a project of the non-profit Large-scale Artificial Intelligence Open Network (LAION), which is dedicated to providing access to cutting edge technology as open source.

HuggingChat is a remarkable achievement for the open source community, allowing anyone to access a chatbot with advanced natural language processing capabilities. The app is based on the OpenAssistant Conversations Dataset (OASST1), which is very new, containing data that was collected up to April 12, 2023. The dataset is the product of a worldwide crowdsourcing effort by over 13,000 volunteers. Crowdsourcing was a good way to generate a multilingual training data which contributed to a high quality dataset. However, the crowdsourcing approach introduced limitations in the quality of the dataset in the form of cultural and subjective biases of the individuals who created and rated the training data. Despite this, the dataset was created with strict quality guidelines to ensure the absence of harmful content.

HuggingChat was trained with the reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) technique, which is a technique for creating a high quality human annotated and quality rated dataset of questions and answers that can be used to train an AI to follow directions. This technique was developed by OpenAI and allows users to train an AI model with the help of human feedback. HuggingChat’s training dataset contains 161,443 messages distributed across 66,497 conversation trees, in 35 different languages, annotated with 461,292 quality ratings.

The release of HuggingChat achieves the goal of putting the RLHF technique within reach of anyone who wants to train an AI, as it is free and available to anyone without registration. HuggingChat is not yet at the level of ChatGPT,but it is a significant step towards creating more accessible and inclusive AI tools for the community. One of the advantages of HuggingChat is that it is highly customizable, and developers can fine-tune the model to suit their specific needs. HuggingChat has been designed to be modular, allowing developers to add new features and functionality to the app with ease.

Hugging Face has made it clear that HuggingChat is not intended to replace ChatGPT or any other advanced conversational AI models.
